VsI “Nomen sancti monasterii” (Lithuania)
VšĮ Nomen sancti monasterii is situated in the beautiful landscape at a wildlife
reservation between Kaunas and Vilnus – the two main cities of Lithuania, where more than 20 universities are situated and where all youth come to study.
We have 2 farm buildings with an area of more than 150m2 rearranged to temple, study room, kitchen, dining-room, living rooms and storages. We have few other buildings under
construction with the plans to expand the territory and increase the housing capacity and other facilities. We have 14 hectare of land – both forests and fields. We also take care of 5 cows and 2 oxes, fruit and vegetable gardens. We try to develop eco-lifestyle, reviving traditional techniques of farming which require less maintenance and no pesticides and fertilizers. So far our programme is becoming been increasingly successful and we hope that in the future we will be able to be fully sustainable, growing most of the needed food and eliminating any waste.
The organization was established in the heart of nature with the goal of educating people and giving them a getaway from the city. A peace and quiet place allowing visitors to have better concentration and learning focus without much distractions serves the main objective of our organization – to help people better deal with the challenges of modern times. We do this through the study of Ancient Eastern traditions, namely Vedic philosophy and culture. In essence, our work has been focused on building a Vedic inspired place which would introduce visitors to the Ancient texts and equip them with skills relevant to their lives and work. Everyone coming to this place has the opportunity to learn not only the Vedic philosophy, but also cultural aspects such as cooking traditional vegetarian foods, as well as playing instruments (harmonium, karatals, mridangam), singing in traditional ways, learning different powerful mantras for better focus. Since we have different volunteers who share different talents and expertise, people coming have the opportunity to learn a wide range of skills – not only farming related and sustainable living techniques, but also such skills as public speaking and others.
Our main guiding principle is “simple life, high thinking”. We try to do follow this ourselves and share it with others. We sincerely believe that focusing more on improving themselves through conscious living and awareness to our surrounding we could help alleviate the problems that the modern societies face. Our previous experience with helping people to find their place in the world and empower them to be a positive change in the world has proved that the knowledge and ideas that we share work and they closely correspond to the heightened values of human dignity and freedom and opportunity to realize one’s full potential.
We place high value on youth and adult education. We believe it is one of the most important investments and it is critical to reducing economic and spiritual poverty and inequality. One of our main aims is to make a genuine contribution to learning and teaching process and to emphasize the importance of knowledge and education. The fundamental mission of our organization is to connect the wisdom of the ancient Indian philosophy with people in a way that this wisdom will bridge the gap between different sciences and arts and unite them in practical knowledge in all areas for the well-being of an individual.
Therefore, we organize lectures, workshops, seminars sharing Vedic philosophy as well as on the topics of self-improvement. Through practical workshops participants gain analytical and organizational skills. We also organize spiritual retreats for the public which main goal is to raise one’s consciousness and inspire participants to improve their lives. We also hold round table discussions and social events, as well as field trips and travels.
Our core volunteers and teachers have been practicing yoga for the past few decades and they have a vast amount of experience to share with younger people. We organize workshops and seminars not only at the place, but also do weekly trips to Vilnius and Kaunas where local youth have the opportunity to learn more about Vedic system of philosophy and its practical significance to their lives, e.g. stress management techniques, better focus, better guidance which allows them to be more effective citizens.
We strongly believe that our work focuses on some of the main objectives and goals of Erasmus+ programme as the newly acquired skills of our EVS volunteers will be validated in Youthpass and language certificate and disseminated within their sending organization and local community. With the newly acuired knowledge and experience in mind, the volunteer will also have better chances in the employment market. We also promote intercultural experiences by engaging ourselves in working with various European organizations with similar goals and values; and we promote equity and inclusion by inviting individuals with fewer opportunities to join us for our projects.
Activities and experience of the organization
Working with educational non-formal projects both in the countryside and major cities in Lithuania and the results that participants managed to achieved has convinced us of the need for this kind of knowledge and the process of learning and implementing key insights from Ancient traditions.
Therefore, we would like to offer the European youth a free, true and tested learning experience to help them with their personal development and to acquire new knowledge and provide them with practical experience for the employment market that they will help build in the near future. One of our main aims is to make a genuine contribution to learning and teaching process and to emphasize the importance of knowledge and education that is relevant to today’s issues and challenges. The lack of connection between people, the lack of ways of dealing with ever increasing stress, the lack of guidance and desire to be proactive and make decisions for the wellbeing of society pushes us forward to share the knowledge and empower others to become active members of their communities.
We know that this means we have to continually improve the teaching techniques of our associates and to offer people a wide variety of learning opportunities. This is why participating in the Erasmus programme and gaining the best practices from other organizations would also improve our own activities and help contribute even more to the society.
At this moment we have:
On top of these educational activities we also offer those interested to learn:
We also participate in other organization’s activities throughout Lithuania helping to educate people on healthy and sustainable living, well-balanced lifestyle which doesn’t neglect any key part of human existence but rather balances work, relationships, family and spiritual needs. We try to take part in trying to present insights from different cultural tradition to enrich the well-being of the society.
Our organization's mission is to become a member in a strong global network of youth
organisations active in areas of volunteering, social entrepreneurship and healthy lifestyles.
The project participants from our organisation will be given a chance to get knowledge and
expertise in thematic fields of this project and to find solutions for engagement of unemployed
young people in the educational and entrepreneurial activities of VSI Nomen sancti
monasterii. We believe that increased international cooperation will foster the long term
cooperation among all partners and will result in many new projects in field of the Erasmus Plus Program.
